HILTON HEAD & SAVANNAH . . . . . . . GREAT CITIES OF THE SOUTHEAST 7 Days / April 12 Broad white-sand beaches, palm trees, rolling dunes; the free spirit and passion of Savannah, live oaks dripping with Spanish moss, stately antebellum mansions, magnolia trees, ships on the river - images of the Old South; it doesn’t get any better! Day 1. We depart on our tour of the Old South with anticipation of all the great things we will see and do! Today we travel through Illinois, Kentucky and into Tennessee. Lodging: Hampton Inn, Manchester, TN Day 2. Following breakfast at the hotel, we travel through Tennessee, Georgia and on to beautiful Hilton Head Island. Lodging: Holiday Inn Oceanfront, Hilton Head, SC (2 nights) Day 3. This morning we tour the indoor and outdoor exhibits of the Coastal Discovery Museum which is a fantastic place to become familiar with the island’s unique history and ecology. We then have a dolphin and nature cruise. This cruise allows you to view the habits and learn more about the Bottlenose Dolphin and other sea creatures of the area. (Be sure to bring a jacket along; it may be cool on the water.) This afternoon, our step-on guide joins us for a driving tour of the island (12 miles long & 5 miles wide). Following the tour, those interested in shopping will have an opportunity to visit the specialty shops of Harbourtown. Those who prefer will be returned to the hotel to enjoy the amenities there, as well as the beach. Day 4. This morning, we travel the short distance to Savannah where we enjoy the narrated “Then & Now” trolley tour to view the vast changes Savannah has experienced over the years. You will see River Street, Colonial Cemetery, Forsyth Park, the restored waterfront, City Market, “Waving Girl”, and beautiful churches and a synagogue. This is followed by a tour of antebellum homes in Savannah. We then have free time for lunch on your own and to explore the many unique shops on River Street. Later this afternoon we have a 1 hour sightseeing cruise along the Savannah River. Lodging: Springhill Suites, Savannah, GA Day 5. Following breakfast at the hotel, we travel to Tybee Island. We are traveling on Hwy. 80. Be sure to watch for Cockspur Beacon on the left side after the Ft. Pulaski Road, as we are approaching and are on the bridge. It is also visible from the lighthouse. We tour Tybee Island Lighthouse Station, Head Keeper’s Cottage, Summer Kitchen & Museum. We then return to Savannah and have a buffet lunch at the world-famous Pirate’s House Restaurant. Since 1753, The Pirate’s House has been welcoming visitors to Savannah with a bounty of delicious food and rousing good times. Following lunch, we travel to Macon for our accommodations this evening. Lodging: LaQuinta Inn & Suites, Macon,GA Day 6. Following breakfast at the hotel, we travel through Georgia and Tennessee to Kentucky. This evening we have dinner at Patti’s 1880’s Settlement in Grand Rivers. Lodging: Kenlake State Resort Park, Hardin, KY Day 7. We enjoy our Kentucky Chef’s Choice breakfast at the resort; then begin our journey home with new friends and wonderful memories of our tour to the Southeast.
