GREAT ESTATES 8 Days / September 14 The Great Estates of New York, castles and cottages on the Hudson, Sleepy Hollow, the home of Eleanor Roosevelt & FDR’s home, library, museum and gravesite; West Point, The Hudson River Valley and Cooperstown are among the sites on this tour. Day 1. Traveling through the Heartland gives us time to envision our destination: the forested river bluffs, magnificent mansions and storybook villages of the Hudson River Valley; a hidden treasure just waiting for our adventurous group of travelers. Lodging: Hampton Inn, Dublin, OH Day 2. Breakfastis included at the hotel this morning and every morning of this tour. A point of interest today will be the world’s most fabulous McDonald’s featuring marble walls enhanced by a 3 story palm tree, a 2-story fountain and a brass elevator that floats up through a beautiful waterfall. A baby grand piano will serenade us as we dine. Lodging: Best Western Country Cupboard Inn, Lewisburg, PA Day 3. This afternoon we arrive in Cooperstown, NY. The Fenimore House, displaying the famous author’s extensive art collections precedes our visit to the Baseball Hall of Fame and the Farmer’s Museum. Lodging: Best Western Cooperstown, Cooperstown, NY Day 4. A step-on guide joins us for the next three days beginning with a peek into the private life of Eleanor Roosevelt, “the first lady of the world”, as we visit Val-Kill, her charming country home near the Hudson River. We then travel the short distance to Springwood, where we tour FDR’s home, library, museum and gravesite. Dinner tonight is included at the hotel. Lodging: Poughkeepsie Grand Hotel, Poughkeepsie, NY (2 nights) Day 5. We begin today with a visit to Boscobel, a gorgeous 1806 Federal-style estate, followed by a box lunch cruise past quaint lighthouses and a string of imposing cliff-side mansions that border the Hudson River. We complete the day with a guided tour of West Point where the “long gray line” marches in a cadence. Dinner this evening is at Shadows on the Hudson River. Day 6. Today it’s on to the famous estate “Kykuit” the extraordinary home of the Rockefeller family and considered the crown jewel of the Hudson River mansions. We will view the exhibits of a fabulous art collection and magnificent gardens. Sunset Cove on the Hudson is our lunch stop today. We finish the day with stops at Sunnyside, Washington Irving’s cottage made famous in “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” and Union Church, displaying exquisite stained glass windows, before departing for this evening’s accommodations. Lodging: Hampton Inn Easton, Easton, PA Day 7. Today begins with a visit to Crayola Factory for “kids of all ages”, where along with seeing Crayolas being made, we can color on glass walls and daydream under some of life’s most tranquil scenes at Dreamscapes. This afternoon we enjoy a mule drawn boat ride on Leigh Canal. Traveling west, we will stop at Johnstown Flood Museum, which exhibits photography and artifacts recreating the shocking story of 1889 when a 40 foot wall of water traveled through the area killing 2,209 people. Lodging: Comfort Inn, Zanesville, OH Day 8. The vivid images of luxurious lifestyles and grand estates built by men who shaped our country will be forever etched in our memories as this trip to the most beautiful side of New York comes to a close.
