YELLOWSTONE & THE BLACKHILLS 10 Days / June 20 Day 1. We begin our trip to the scenic West as we travel across Iowa and into Nebraska. Lodging: Marina Inn, South Sioux City, NE Day 2. This morning’s schedule begins with a visit to the Corn Palace in Mitchell, SD. This remarkable flamboyant Byzantine building is decorated each year with colored grain and grasses. This afternoon we travel through the Badlands National Park in South Dakota. Formed by wind and erosion these sharply eroded buttes and spires form a beauty that is stark and simple. We stop at Wall Drug Store, that famous oasis that has welcomed tourists for many years. The entire town of Deadwood, SD is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. You will enjoy walking around this historic town. We are also there during Wild Bill Hickok Days listed by ABA as one of “North America’s Top 100 Events”. Watch the cowboy fast draw, gun spinning, view the art exhibit, and enjoy free concerts by well-known groups. Lodging: Mineral Palace Hotel, Deadwood, SD (2 nights) Day 3. Following breakfast at the hotel, we make our first stop at Chief Crazy Horse on the Avenue of Chiefs. As we continue our drive through beautiful hill country, we are anxious to catch the first glimpse of Mt. Rushmore. At the Visitor Center you will learn how the faces of four great American presidents were carved into a 6,000 foot granite mountain. It is a spectacular drive through SpearfishCanyon and back to Deadwood this evening for more “Wild Bill Hickok Days” fun! Day 4. We have breakfast again this morning at the hotel. Scenic drives fill our day and the beauty of the Shoshone Mountains unfolds before us as we skirt the Big Horn Mountain Range near Sheridan. Then a breathtaking drive through ShellCanyon brings us to the picturesque western town of Cody. Tonight we visit the famous Buffalo Bill Historical Center. Lodging: Comfort Inn Buffalo Bill Village Resort, Cody, WY Day 5. After breakfast at the hotel, a park interpreter boards our coach and describes the wonders of Yellowstone National Parkand alerts us when we are entering wildlife areas. We walk the boardwalks to view the myriad of spewing marvels and catch the cool drift of Old Faithful’s lofty plume – a pulsing jet rising as high as 200 feet. This afternoon we leave this land of bubbling paint pots and tumbling waterfalls and travel along the eastern edge of the Grand Teton Mountain Range. This evening you will enjoy walking about a typical town from the “Old West”. Lodging: 49’er Inn & Suites, Jackson, WY (2 nights) Day 6. This morning is free for breakfast at the hotel, and to relax and enjoy the area. This afternoon we embark on a scenic float trip on the Snake River. Tonight the fun continues at a western cookout with entertainment. Day 7. We have breakfast at the hotel this morning. Traveling across the big Shoshone and Arapahoe reservations we enjoy the ever changing landscape of Wyoming today. Late this afternoon we arrive in southeastern Wyoming. Lodging: Hampton Inn, Casper, WY Day 8. Following breakfast, our journey homeward follows the Platte River like the pioneers and Pony Express riders of days gone by. Lodging: Holiday Inn Express, North Platte, NE Day 9. We have breakfast at the hotel. This morning, the visit to the Great Platte River Archway Monument is a highlight. This eight story high archway towers over the interstate and celebrates the Westward migration of thousands of pioneers. Late this afternoon we cross into Missouri. Lodging: Drury Inn, St. Joseph, MO Day 10. We enjoy our breakfast at the hotel; then travel home reminiscing about the wonderful sights and great experiences we have shared.
